Hello, this is Brandon with another Mix Minute, and today we’re going to discuss vari mu compressors.
To simplify it, this type of compressor feeds the source into a tube, which causes gain reduction when the signal gets too high.
As a result, the compressor isn’t as grabby on transients. This make Vari Mu compressors well suited for instrument busses. The sustained sounds become glued together, and the transients aren’t being squashed.
This technique demonstrated on Imp Act’s “Another Life”. Get a copy of these multitracks free from the cambridge educational multitrack archive. https://cambridge-mt.com/ms/mtk/#ImpAct
